Beltronics Pro GX65 Radar Detector (Black) Review
For 10 years I have been using Beltronics radar detectors for a number of positive reasons: quality, ease of use, a voice that tells me what type of signal the detector is receiving, and the consistency of warnings. First, let me say, I don’t speed, well, I may go a touch above the limit sometimes, but no more than 5 mph, and sometimes I drive slower, depending on the road and weather conditions.
With all that I have going on in the car: XM radio, iPod, DVD-Audio, Bluetooth telephone reception, dual heat controls, etc., the vocal warning system tells me what type of radar signal is being detected without my having to look at the detector. However, the GX65, with its GPS, gives me a reason to look now, because if I am driving over 15 MPH and a signal is detected, by using GPS, it shows my true speed on the detector’s display. This helps me keep my vehicle’s speed in check, and prevent my speed from creeping-up, even if I have the cruise control operating.
Our other car has a Passport top of the line detector (made by Beltronics, too), and while it gives me about the same amount of warning as the RX65 my GX65 replaced, which I handed that down to my step-daughter, tests by radar enthusiasts, and even my following Ka band police cars from a distance, show I get almost two miles of warning over rolling hills, and usually a mile around gentle curves of police speed traps. Another great feature, is that the GX65 is also capable of letting your “mark” speed traps, which in our area is crucial, especially around the end of the month when some officers “may” be trying to meet their “quota” in these difficult economic times.
Updating the data in the detector is rather painless; however, because you need to have your detector running and the latest camera locations downloaded to your computer, you may need to be creative by using a laptop in your call, or having a 12-volt “cigar plug” power supply readily available at desktop. You will also need to have an USB to micro USB cable to connect your detector to your computer. One thing, also, is that your computer’s O/S has to be Windows for you to update your detector.
As I mentioned, I really don’t speed, but the warnings the GX65 gives me makes me doubly sure I am obeying the law if I am approaching an officer with a radar gun, or an intersection with a speed camera or an area I’ve marked to remind me of a speed trap.
I usually do not post reviews so soon after purchasing a product, but even though I’ve only had the GX65 for a less than a week, it already has shown me that it is an significant upgrade over the RX65 and well worth having. If I were debating about purchasing either the RX65 or the GX65, I would buy the GX65. The ticket you avoid would make-up the difference in price.

Excellent Functionality

BRT Dark (Full Dark Mode)
In this mode, the display will not show any visual alerts when the GX65 detects signals. Only the audible alert will tell you of detected signals.
Mark Location (MRK)
The “MRK” button allows you to mark a specific location and label it for future reference. Once marked, the GX65 will provide an alert with an arrow indicating the direction of the location when you reach this area again. This can be extremely useful for known speed traps or camera locations that you’d like to remember.
Speed Check
The GX65’s Speed Check feature provides a visual indication of your vehicle speed during the first few seconds of an alert. This allows you to instantly check your speed without looking at your speedometer. Speed Check is displayed regardless of your meter setting.
New Variable Speed Sensitivity also provides real-time radar protection based on your vehicle’s speed.
Display Safety Radar Messages
Safety Warning System (SWS) uses a modified K-band radar signal to alert users of Highway Construction or Maintenance, Highway Hazard Zone Advisories, Weather Related Hazards, Travel Information/Convenience, and Fast/Slow Moving Vehicles. The SWS has 64 possible messages (60 currently allocated), all of which can be displayed on your RX55’s LED display.
